Gifted and Talented Program
The Cole Middle School Gifted and Talented Plan, 2026-2027
The Gifted and Talented program is project-based, emphasizing student voice and independent learning. GT students will choose a topic of study, complete research, and develop a project presenting their research. These projects will be presented in public-facing forums, such as the DSST network-wide SPUR showcase (For 7th and 8th grade and occurring the last week of February) and a Cole community Dragon Fire event (which includes all grades) in which students display the final products of their research.
Students will have bi-monthly, one-to-one meetings with the GT coordinator or mentor. These will serve to monitor both academic and social-emotional/affective progress. Students also will participate in bi-monthly grade-level meetings. Additionally, GT students will meet at monthly morning meetings, which will combine GT students from all grade levels.
Programming needs for the GT program are planned for the year. Professional development centered around identification, differentiation, and the SEL needs of GT children will be planned. Additionally, training and support of GT mentors will also take place on a monthly basis.
Talent pool students can choose to participate in project completion. and attend morning meetings and grade-level meetings. They will have monthly check-ins, and progress will be monitored during 1:1 check-ins and Google form. We will expand our pool with a renewed focus on the arts and leadership, as well as developing and instituting a portfolio process for students who show indicators of giftedness, but struggle to achieve the data points needed on standardized tests.
Athletics
DSST: Cole Middle Schools athletic program is designed to inspire both participation and enjoyment through interscholastic team competition and non-competitive fitness activities. Our program promotes the development of advanced skills, strategic thinking, teamwork, and sportsmanship while cultivating school spirit, character, and joy.
We aim to create an environment where every student feels a sense of belonging, motivation, and achievement, striking a balance between challenge and encouragement. Athletics at DSST: Cole are not just extracurricular activities, they are a vital extension of our curriculum and a powerful expression of our Core Values in action.
