The Montview Family Association- The FAM


Hello DSST families! Welcome to the 2019/2020 school year! My name is Mandy Lindsay and I will be serving as chair of the campus parent group for the coming year. Our long-standing parent organization has been known as the STP, but over the summer, and on the heels of the school’s name change, we have decided on a new name that will move us forward.

So let me introduce the Family Association of Montview, or FAM for short. The premise is this – if you have a student here on campus, you are part of the FAM! Our goal is to help create a schoolwide community of students, staff, and families – with our focus being you, the families!

FAM is rolling out some new programs this fall and we need your help to make them a success.

First up – we have identified areas for parent involvement and ask that you plug in to the committees that work with your interests and talents. They are as follows: activities, advisory parents, communication, community service, enrichment, events, fundraising, inclusion/diversity, DSST network/charter advocacy, recruitment, special projects – school grounds/landscaping, spirit wear, teacher/staff appreciation, and think tank/community issues.

Second, and this piggy backs off the committee discussion, we are launching a brand new Advisory Parents program. Think back to elementary school where there was a room parent who helped the teacher and planned events, and then scale that up to meet the needs of middle and high school classrooms. We are looking for at least two parents or family members from every advisory to help the advisor in any way that may be needed (or organize volunteers to do so), plan events for the students and families, and help keep the advisory families up to date on school events and communications.

Third, we are hosting our first-ever Classroom Setup event right before school starts, on August 13th and 14th. Teachers take a lot of pride and spend a lot of time setting up their classrooms and this is an opportunity to help out, get to know teachers, and meet other parents and students.

And finally, to get the school year started smoothly, we are looking for parent volunteers to help reduce traffic flow into the parking lot before and after school. Students are not allowed to be dropped off/picked up in the parking lot, and this task would entail standing at the entrance of the parking lot while wearing an orange vest with a sign explaining the dropoff guidelines to our community.
