Family Memo 3/1/19

March 1st, 2019, HS Family Memo

A Note From High School Director: Lia Brunner

This is the first week of Trimester 3!  Please encourage your student to take advantage of this clean slate.  Many of our advisors focused on school commitments this week with their advisees.  Advisors encouraged their advisees to develop their “growth mindset” by identifying two areas they could commit to upholding for this trimester.  Whether that is going to mandatory tutoring, doing your homework right when you get home from school, or participating more in class, please talk with your student about their “growth mindset” and about the commitments they can make in school!   This is an opportunity to build off of current successes and learn from previous mistakes.  This is what a “growth mindset” is all about!

Let’s make this the best and most successful trimester yet!  We also can’t wait to see you at Parent Teacher Conferences!

Breathe fire and be well,

Lia

Family Memo 2/22

February 22nd, 2019, HS Family Memo

A Note From High School Director: Lia Brunner

“When I first met Mr. Tissue during sophomore year, I didn’t think I had any math potential, but within a month I was working like a mathematician. Was this magic? No, it was Mr. Tissue, one of the best teachers and role models I have ever had.”  Javier Cortez, DSST: Cole HS Junior on his math teacher, Jeff Tissue.

On February 8th, thirteen Master Teachers were celebrated by our students at DSST’s annual “A Night to Celebrate Exemplary Teaching.”  This is the Oscars or Grammy’s of teaching - DSST style - with red carpet and all! This is a night to honor the profession of teaching, to honor great teaching, to honor great teachers.

This important night celebrated the DSST teachers who placed Accomplished, Lead or Master Teacher for the first time this Fall. Our outstanding Master Teachers represent over 90 years of experience or over 15,000 school days, supporting over 7,000 students. It was a truly incredible evening as we not only celebrated their hard work, but witnessed emotional and heartfelt student speeches about how these teachers have played a pivotal role in their lives.

Congratulations to our 2018-19 DSST: Cole High School Master Teachers:

  • Becky Luetjen, Humanities Teacher, Cole HS

  • Courtney DeAnda, Spanish, Cole HS

  • Jeff Tissue, Algebra, Cole HS

  • Dara Zack, English Language Support, Cole HS

These educators, along with all of our Cole HS teachers, are so deserving of the recognition they received.  We have an incredible opportunity to inspire, motivate, push, and demand excellence from the students we work with each and every day.  We will continue to do just that!  As always, thank you for your continuous support and partnership!

Breathe fire and be well,

Lia Brunner
