Electives @ BHS

We believe that in order to prepare each student for college in the 21st century, we need to develop the whole person. Guided by this belief, DSST Byers High School electives are creative, collaborative, and engaging classes that empower students to explore and better understand themselves and the world around them. We teach students to actively take risks, innovate, think critically, and communicate effectively. We develop students’ community and cultural awareness, aesthetic appreciation, self-confidence, and self-discipline. With these tools we develop graduates who live active, healthy, fulfilling lives.

Electives at DSST: Byers High School

Vision: DSST: Byers High School will run a rigorous academic program where students take a full load of college preparatory core courses.  At Byers, students take 6 classes; one of them is their academic elective which is Spanish.  Byers also believes that students need enriching and stretching electives offerings that may not be a part of our Core Academic Curriculum.  As a small school, it is not possible to employ the diverse instructors necessary to provide for these enriching experiences on a full time basis.  Therefore, Byers High School will utilize community based instructors who work with students around their passion as either part of their role in a Community Based Organization, local business or personal interest. Byers hopes to employ instructors in a variety of topics that align with student interest.

Potential Classes: DSST: Byers High School is open to input from students and community members about the kinds of electives we will offer.  We hope to find individuals who can support students in the following areas: Cross Fit, Team Sports, Step, Music (Guitar, Drum line, Instrumental and Choral), Art (2D and 3D), Drama, Cooking, Blogging, Photography, Outdoor Education, Dance, Sustainability (Gardening, Environmental Science), Computer Programming, Physics/Engineering, Current Events Discussion, Bike Maintenance, Ethnic Studies (history or literature—local or national), Robotics, Student Council, Yearbook, College Teasers (philosophy, ethics), Chess, Yoga and other creative offerings.

 Logistics:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays during Period 5 & 6
  • Lottery:
    • Within 2 weeks into the start of each trimester all students will attend an “electives pitch day”. Here, students will hear presentations from all electives teachers on what course offerings will be like as well as get a chance to know the teachers.
    • Once students have heard about each class, students will elect courses based on a lottery number (1-150) that will be randomly assigned to them.
    • Electives classes will have anywhere between 5 and 15 students in them depending on classroom space and teacher preference. Once a course is full, students will need to move on to their 2nd, 3rd or 4thchoice class.
  • Grade and Attendance: Electives classes are factored into student GPA the same as any other course.
  • If you have any additional questions concerning electives courses at Byers High School please contact our electives coordinator, Mike Lang, at: mike.lang@scienceandtech.org
